Tip of the day

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Last week we talked about how VPNs can help you in many ways, from modifying your internet geo-location right through to improving security and stopping snooping busy bodies from tracking your every movement on the web. Today we are showing how a VPN can help you view streaming programmes outside of your geolocation. For example, being in New Zealand we are often excluded from viewing British TV programmes, as well as US ones. Even Netflix has different regions which affect what can be viewed depending upon where one currently happens to be.

Basically, each household who has an Internet connection is allocated a unique number, called an IP Address (Internet Protocol Address) and these addresses are assigned according to the country in which it is issued. Later in the week we will talk more about the technical side of things, for now we will just touch upon it. This means that service providers, such as television companies or other media providers can tell where you are. A VPN, in the most simple terms, tricks these companies into believing that you are in the country of your choice, such as GB, US, or elsewhere, by allocating you a direct connection in that country with an IP Address which is local to that country, thus you appear, to the Internet, as being right there! To put it simply this means you can watch programmes outside of your area.

A great VPN with which to do this is Nord VPN. It is a chargeable application with a monthly fee but it offers all of the benefits of a secure VPN and is one of the few that actually works for Geo-relocation. We will do a Tip of the Day on how to install it at some point later, or you can ring us or email us to make an appointment for us to install it or advise you as required (standard rates apply). For an even better experience combine the Nord VPN with the UBlock ad blocker from a previous Tip of the Day!!
